Dutch education system

From the age of 5 until the end of the year of their 16th birthday children shall attend school.

If, at the age of 16, the child did not obtained his/her diploma, he/she is obliged to train for a qualification (kwalificatieplicht), which implies he/she shall stay at school until either they will be 18 or until they will get their diploma.

In order to assure that children are regularly going to school, the municipality employs school attendance officers (leerplichtambtenaren) to check it.

In case a student would be absent from school for more than three consecutive days, the school is required to notify the attendance officer, who will be responsible to investigate on the reasons behind this absence and to report  to the authorities.

Only in exceptional and justified cases a child can be temporarily exempted from compulsory education.

As a parent in the Netherlands you are responsible for compliance with the rules of compulsory education. Violation of this obligation could lead to prosecution of parents.

Parents and young people over the age of 12 can be fined, receive a study order (leerstraf) or, in extreme circumstances, be jailed.

If the child for any reason need to be absent, the parents shall notify the school.
